I think that's (steamer trunk) a great idea. I've thought about doing one in a custom made size 'brief' case, but wouldn't be able to put in the track as I would prefer (a modified 'dog bone' with a cross over of some kind so the trains could go either direction on the track). And I've even though of a coffee table layout. But I also have a trunk that I was thinking of using as a storage/coffee table, so I find you idea of using that as a layout really of interest. I also liked your Grit newpaper truck, because as kids my brother and I sold them for a while. My suggestion would be, since we had a number of them in my small town in southwest Utah would be to have a small fruit stand somewhere on the layout, and all the misc. things that might go with it (garden, fruit trees, trucks, so on). I would think that that would be something that would fit into any town back in the fifties and sixties as that is when they seemed to be in their "hayday." I wish you well on the layout, and will be watching how it turns out.

          Don,

I also had a very small Grit route as a little gremlin (no more than 20 or so of our neighbors as customers). It was a very good experience and my first experience at work other than mowing a few lawns. Thanks for taking the time to visit and pass on your ideas. A fruit stand and the accompaniments would be nice. I haven't fully envisioned what the trunk will hold. That's why I am after some ideas before firming up any plan. I believe the inside main compartment will show an area just outside of New Orleans with a train station and railroad associated buildings and a few 40's era businesses, etc. and on the back lid when open will have a Bourbon St. or Canal St. like avenue running along the bottom of it. As a FYI, I used an oversized trunk to run two standard oval MTL tracks on seperate levels. The top level will be a diesel passenger and the bottom will be a Mikado steam. The trunk is 21 x 36.

Hi Bruce,                                                                                                                                                                      March 03,2009

My previous layout was in a lobster trap and didn’t have many structures/vehicles. Now that I have a multitude of both structures/vehicles, I am hoping to have a considerably larger and well appointed layout. I have many buildings, etc. from my favorite Z artists which also happen to be yours as well from what I gathered from visiting your web site. The site is really neat, too!

Again, thank you. Believe me, your vehicles are the best!

Regards,

Jan
